by Pearl Goldman who was one of Norman's main models.

In 1937 Pearl won the Miss Bondi Surf Queen competition, catapulting her into media attention and her first role in the theatre.

It was at this time she was spotted by Norman Lindsay, who wanted to paint her, and she became a central figure in several of his most famous works such as The Amazons, Imperia and Gifts to Venus.

The book has 70 pages including many colour pictures of Norman's studio and his works.

Uncommon early Australian photographic view book of 1930s Melbourne at night, ranging from elegant images such as 'Henley on the Yarra' depicting fireworks over the city, to a more gritty image of a tradesman asleep on a pile of wares at the market, beneath a sign warning of pickpockets. The images show the influence of Paul Morand's 'Paris de Nuit', a photographic study of the City of Light at night, which was published the previous year.

The images are evocative-- depictions of different parts of Melbourne, many late night car lined street views without many pedestrians, including: Collins Street, Ridgway Place, fog over the city, the Public Library, the Eastern Market, Melbourne Under the Moon, Swanston Street, the Alexandra Gardens, and Chinatown. ‘]

Reference: for essay with this title see The Art of the Collection, - State Library of Victoria, with Richard Aitken, Leigh Astbury, Ashley Crawford, Graeme Davidson and Brenda Niall. The Art of the Collection is a celebration of the State Library of Victoria's Picture Collection the oldest visual documentary collection in Australia. Acting on its mandate to collect and preserve Victoria's documentary heritage, the Library acquires paintings, maps, diaries and documents that showcase all facets of Victorian life, past and present. The Library has an extensive collection of art works and a permanent display of 150 works in the Cowen Gallery. The works illustrate Victoria's landscape, early Melbourne scenes, and significant events and figures in the European exploration and settlement of Australia. The works range from early eighteenth and nineteenth century portraits, busts to contemporary portraits and scenes of Melbourne and Victoria from the 1800s until now. Works of some of our most celebrated and talented Australian artists are in the collection and showcased in this book- Eug ne von Guerard, John Glover, Frederick McCubbin, Albert Tucker, Ian Fairweather, Lina Bryans, Jan Senbergs, Juan Davila and Howard Arkley to name but a few.
