Reference: for essay with this title see The Art of the Collection, - State Library of Victoria, with Richard Aitken, Leigh Astbury, Ashley Crawford, Graeme Davidson and Brenda Niall. The Art of the Collection is a celebration of the State Library of Victoria's Picture Collection the oldest visual documentary collection in Australia. Acting on its mandate to collect and preserve Victoria's documentary heritage, the Library acquires paintings, maps, diaries and documents that showcase all facets of Victorian life, past and present. The Library has an extensive collection of art works and a permanent display of 150 works in the Cowen Gallery. The works illustrate Victoria's landscape, early Melbourne scenes, and significant events and figures in the European exploration and settlement of Australia. The works range from early eighteenth and nineteenth century portraits, busts to contemporary portraits and scenes of Melbourne and Victoria from the 1800s until now. Works of some of our most celebrated and talented Australian artists are in the collection and showcased in this book- Eug ne von Guerard, John Glover, Frederick McCubbin, Albert Tucker, Ian Fairweather, Lina Bryans, Jan Senbergs, Juan Davila and Howard Arkley to name but a few.

Reference: Daphne Mayo, Sculptor - Daphne Mayo. Includes scholarly essay by Judith MacKay and "A Tribute" by Lloyd Rees. Lists 43 works with 12 black and white reproductions. [Born in Balmain, Sydney in 1895, she was educated in Brisbane at St. Margaret's Anglican Girls School, and received a Diploma in Art Craftsmanship from the Brisbane Central Technical College in 1913. At the college she was strongly influenced by L.J Harvey who initiated her interest in modelling. She further developed her skills in this medium when she was presented with an opportunity to go to London in 1919 through an art scholarship provided by Queensland Wattle League. There she took a position as an assistant sculptor before her acceptance into the Sculpture School of the Royal Academy. Despite her small frame, she produced many physically demanding works that were carved in situ. On her return to Brisbane in 1925, Daphne created a number of local works. Best known are the Brisbane City Hall Tympanum (1927-30), the Queensland Women's War Memorial (1929-32) and many other public sculptures in Brisbane. She also created delightful studio works including a group of modernist pieces in terracotta and bronze. ]

[’Clement Meadmore is one of the most highly respected artists of his generation, for both the quality of his work and the integrity of his commitment to public sculpture. This sculptor has been uniquely successful as a creator of public art that serves as a positive, unifying force in the environment. In this handsome volume, author Eric Gibson, former Art Critic of the Washington (D.C.) Times, surveys the artist’s life and forty-year career to date. Meadmore’s work has evolved from dense, coiled sculptures in the 1960s, to sculptures composed of multiple parts in the 1970s, and finally to the branching pieces of the past decade. Although initially linked with the Minimalists, Meadmore has transcended geometry with work of uncommon force and elegance, powerful in large scale and small. It relies for its effect on the opposition between line and mass, also deriving power and eloquence from its fusion of formal invention with intense feeling, a frankly spiritual dimension. Yet ultimately the appeal of Meadmore’s work lies in its success as sheer form.
The Sculpture of Clement Meadmore is fully illustrated with 44 colorplates and 60 black-and-white illustrations (many of the photographs are by the artist himself) of works ranging in time from 1956 to 1993 and in size from pieces that fit in the palm of a hand to others that stretch more than forty-six feet, not to mention a proposal for a six-hundred-foot skyscraper sculpture (this range in scale is belied by the seeming monumentality and robust physicality of even the smallest maquette). It also includes a bibliography, chronology, lists of solo and group exhibitions and public collections, and index.’]
