Reference: for essay with this title see The Art of the Collection, - State Library of Victoria, with Richard Aitken, Leigh Astbury, Ashley Crawford, Graeme Davidson and Brenda Niall. The Art of the Collection is a celebration of the State Library of Victoria's Picture Collection the oldest visual documentary collection in Australia. Acting on its mandate to collect and preserve Victoria's documentary heritage, the Library acquires paintings, maps, diaries and documents that showcase all facets of Victorian life, past and present. The Library has an extensive collection of art works and a permanent display of 150 works in the Cowen Gallery. The works illustrate Victoria's landscape, early Melbourne scenes, and significant events and figures in the European exploration and settlement of Australia. The works range from early eighteenth and nineteenth century portraits, busts to contemporary portraits and scenes of Melbourne and Victoria from the 1800s until now. Works of some of our most celebrated and talented Australian artists are in the collection and showcased in this book- Eug ne von Guerard, John Glover, Frederick McCubbin, Albert Tucker, Ian Fairweather, Lina Bryans, Jan Senbergs, Juan Davila and Howard Arkley to name but a few.

For as long as Australians have been serving in wars, the victories and losses, battles and faces have been recorded by artists. What is it like to be an artist in war? How does the experience of war change artists and how, in turn, has their work changed Australians' view of themselves, their country and their involvement in conflict? Award-winning journalist Scott Bevan put these questions to Australian artists who have recorded, been affected by and responded to theatres of war, including Sir William Dargie, Nora Heysen, Ray Parkin, Bruce Fletcher, Rick Amor, Ray Beattie, Wendy Sharpe and Peter Churcher. Their stories are fascinating, painting a vivid picture of the artists' experience of depicting conflict: the hope and tragedy, inspiration and frustration, humanity and beauty that can be found amid the death and destruction of war. Staining the paper with their own sweat, and drawing with whatever materials they had to hand in hostile and dangerous environments, the artists risked their lives to create their art. They were compelled to record what they were seeing, from Alan Moore's bleak sketches of the horror of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, to Ray Parkin's drawings of the tropical beauty that lay just beyond the barbed wire of the Japanese prisoner-of-war camp he was interned in, to Rick Amor's imposing and thought-provoking oil paintings of the destruction in East Timor in 1999. These artists have shaped how we see war, immortalising soldiers and battles. From World War II to Vietnam and the war against terrorism, the war artist has opened our eyes and perceptions to historic events that might otherwise have been censored, distorted or forgotten. In the process they have created some extraordinary art - beautiful, harrowing, mesmerising and character defining.

“67 copies of ‘Rainbow’ were first published by Richard Griffin in 1980. This second edition contains 35 prints, 17 of these are from the original book. This edition is hand printed, hand coloured and scripted by the artist and is limited to six numbered copies and one working proof copy’ – the handwritten colophon. This is copy number 5/6 and signed by Arena Sibley, dated 1988.

Lithuanian-born Melbourne artist and conservationist Irena Sibley’s superbly illustrated book tells the story of Rainbow, doll from Lithuania who arrives in Australia and is treated with xenophobic distrust from the other dolls. As well as being a magnificently illustrated children’s book and livre d’artiste, Rainbow is also a poignant reflection of Sibley’s own experience as a post-war migrant attempting to fit into to Australian society.

Born Irena Justina Pauliukonis, ‘her mother Anele and father Zenonas Pauliukonis fled communist-occupied Lithuania in 1946 when Irena was a baby. The Pauliukonis family immigrated to Australia via refugee camps in Freiburg, Germany, where her brother Vidas was born, and Naples, Italy. The family arrived in Sydney, Australia on 31 December 1949 and settled in Bathurst, before establishing their family home in Cabramatta in Sydney’s western suburbs … Sibley has published over a dozen children’s books, six handmade limited-edition books, and many bookplates for private collectors. Her artwork employs a range of techniques, including hand-coloured linocuts, scratchboard, and, later in her career, acrylic painting. Stylistically, her work can reflect Eastern European printmaking traditions, as well as contemporary representations of Australia’s natural environment.’ (Wikipedia).

Copies of this second edition are held in the State Library of New South Wales and State Library of Queensland.

Reference: see Stravinsky’s Lunch by Drusilla Modjeska. [From Publishers Weekly: ‘British-born Modjeska is a longtime resident of Australia, where she published Poppy, a fictionalized biography of her mother, and The Orchard, a set of philosophico-feminist fictionalized lives that won a host of prizes down under. This book similarly recounts the separate lives of two lesser-known Australian women painters, Stella Bowen (1893-1947) and Grace Cossington Smith (1894-1984), focusing on their domestic arrangements and compromises. Bowen left Australia in 1914, never to return, instead painting, bearing a daughter to the married Ford Maddox Ford in London and unabashedly leading a precarious, bohemian life in Europe. A useful overview of the beginnings of modern Australian painting follow Bowen's often desperate story, before Modjeska picks up Smith in her quiet, Turramurra (Northern Australia) spinsterhood, where she painted what was around her. Modjeska seems much more interested in process than product, though she clearly loves the work of both artists, reproduced here in 85 b&w reproductions and 24 pages of color plates.’]

[’Kate Smith
(b. 1947)

Kate Smith was born in Manchester, England in 1947. She immigrated to New Zealand in 1952 as a “ten-pound Pom” when she was five years old and was educated in Cambridge, New Zealand.

Her artistic talent emerged after being inspired by a friend’s creative family of musicians, actors, singers, play-writes and artists. Originally Kate made clothes for hippy boutiques, as well as working in textile fashion design and teaching ballet.

Then in 1973, with a young family, Kate was prompted by a desire to buy her first home. She took up drawing after her husband bought her a 99 cent “How to Draw” book from a newsagent. Within a year Kate had become Auckland’s first street artist, presented her first solo show and became the family’s breadwinner.

During her time in New Zealand, Kate lived between Australia and New Zealand for a number of years before moving permanently to Australia in 1979. Her career has flourished with many successful solo exhibitions in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. Her artistic career has spanned 30 years and she is one of Australia’s finest pastel artists, and while she has worked in other mediums such as oil, acrylic and watercolour, her love of pastel is abiding and she regards this as her favourite medium.

Working in the pastel, Kate’s technique with this soft and vibrant medium is masterful. Admirers of her work often marvel at the glorious and unbridled colour in her works. Thick and sumptuous, her pastels are often mistaken for acrylic or gouache works. Perhaps this is because Kate uses fine quality, hand-made pastels, which contain 100 per cent pure pigment. She says of the pastel medium: “People don’t realise that pastel is one of the oldest mediums. One just has to look at the Aboriginal cave drawings – same thing, pure ochre. Once protected by glass, pastel can outlast oil and will not fade or crack.”

Kate is a self-taught artist. In addition to her figurative works, for which she has become very well known, Kate also created a body of work representing the Australian landscape, which depict the atmosphere and the harshness of the Australian interior. In 1989 she was offered sponsorship by the state of Queensland and this resulted in the completion of her book titled “Alice and Beyond” featuring her work of landscapes in Central Australia.

Since the 1970’s Kate has exhibited widely in both group and solo shows in New Zealand, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. From the 1980’s to mid 1999 she worked mainly in oils and acrylics and now focuses mainly on working in pastel.

Kate’s signature pieces are her works of fascinating women set against a backdrop of rich colour. She also incorporates elements of glamour and surrealism in these works, both in the locations of her women and the witty titles she bestows on the works.

Blessed with a fertile imagination, Kate spontaneously interprets these visions in her stylish, witty and attractive pastels, which are striking both for their richness of colour and beautiful line. Classical and also contemporary, Kate’s pastels of women have proved to be a great success and are much sought-after. Arresting in their simplicity, they offer an insight into femininity and womanhood. The women are always mysterious and seductive, with elegant bodies and soft iridescent skin.

Kate says of her work: “Art is Life ... Life is colours, texture and guts, with the magic of each stroke artists put together a dramatic image which travels through our eyes into our emotions. My goal as an artist is to bring it all together into one expressive viewable moment.” In all of Kate’s pastels, she aims to create a sense of intrigue so that viewers are taken “into a kind of fairy tale. My women have been woven into their own narrative, created both by their setting and by the viewer’s reaction. I love to take people on a journey into my paintings and surrealism lends itself to story-telling”.

Asked about her fascination for women which have been her main subject for over a decade, Kate jokingly points to the fact that her home is an old converted school and that her studio, located in a lavender filled garden, originally housed the girls’ lavatory.

The stylishness of Kate’s women and their fashion inspiration arises from Kate’s forays to Paris, where she indulges a self-confessed addiction to scouring clothing shops for unusual pieces. Paris is Kate’s “shopping heaven” for food, fashion and art and the artist’s interest in glamour is reflected in her admiration of European and Russian art from the 1920’s to the 1940’s. As well as living in Australia and New Zealand, Kate has also has lived in South Africa and London, and has travelled to Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Russia and France.

Kate loves colour and admirers of her pastels marvel at their gloriously thick texture and unbridled hues. When her children were young they would return from school to find their whole home decorated in a new shade of paint Kate was working with – bedspreads would be dyed a new colour and flowers on the table would match the theme!

Kate is a multi-award winning artist with over 100 art prizes to her credit, as well as many resort and corporate commissions. However, like all artists has worked hard for success. She sees optimism as her secret weapon and tells the story of early painting days when forced to live in a squat, she hosted a wealthy client and her chauffeur in a room devoid of decor and conveniences, apart from her vibrant hand painted walls!

Kate Smith’s art prizes include: SGIO art award (1983); Moreton Shire Art Award, Queensland (1983, 1984 & 1987); Sunshine Newspaper Company Award (1983); Nerang Festival of the Arts Award (1983); Beenleigh City Art Award, Queensland (1984); Keith Stone Memorial Art Award, Queensland (1985); Aberdare Art Prize, Queensland (1985); Noosa Art Award, Queensland (1984); City of Toowoomba Art Awards (1985); Royal Queensland Art Society Award, Rockhampton (1987); Beenleigh Arts Festival Award, Queensland (1987); Burke Hall Art Prize, Victoria (1986, 1988 & 1991) and St. Kevins Art Prize, Victoria (1987).

Kate has also had her work reproduced in several publications, including: Readers Digest cover (1985); Outrider Volume 2, No. 1, feature article and front cover, (1985); Queensland Homes Art and Design (1989); Art in Australia Winter Issue, Volume 26, No. 4 (1989); “Alice and Beyond”, text and artwork, Kate Smith (1989); Boolarong Press Qld Pty Ltd; Belle Interior, December 2000; and Noosa Style Magazine cover, December 2004.

Paintings by Kate Smith are represented in regional art galleries in Queensland at Toowoomba, Ipswich and Stanthorpe and the Brisbane City Council Gallery as well as private and corporate collections, both in Australia overseas.’]

Douglas Burrage Snelling (1916-1985) was one of Asia-Pacific's most significant interpreters of California modern design and architecture innovations from the 1930s to the 1970s – particularly luxury lifestyle themes popular in Beverly Hills and Palm Springs.
Inspired by a stream of apprentices from Frank Lloyd Wright – notably Richard Neutra, Harwell Hamilton Harris and Gordon Drake – he was briefly employed by Beverly Hills architect Douglas Honnold and received technical instructions from John Lautner on how to build the southern hemisphere's first 'infinity' (spill-edge) swimming pool.
Snelling was a forerunner (from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s) of the 'indigenous modern' (thatched hut-inspired) thrust in luxury Asia-Pacific resorts and residences. This movement peaked with Peter Muller and Kerry Hill's hotels in Bali and Amanresorts from the 1970s to the 1990s, and it included Sydney residences with tribal-style roofs in corrugated steel by Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury during the 1980s and 1990s.
Snelling can be regarded as 'the missing link' practising architecture and multi-disciplinary design in Sydney between the departure of Wright's former students Walter and Marion Griffin in 1935 and the 1950s career beginnings of a new generation of organic modernist architects and designers who later became known as 'The Sydney School'.
Snelling was one of the first and most talented Sydney architects to design and build houses in Wright-influenced styles after the Second World War. But he was not 'in the club' of younger, post-Wrightian practitioners who interpreted British 'new brutalism' (raw concrete), Scandinavian modernism and Australian 'nuts and berries' themes from the mid 1950s to the mid 1970s. He did not appreciate literary allusions to the 'bush spirit' of Australians; his sentiments aligned with the California-Polynesia tropical paradise lifestyle movement known as 'the tiki style'.
Snelling also seems to have been both Britain and New Zealand's most accomplished emigré architect/designers working in the south-west Pacific from the 1940s to the 1970s. Born in England and raised in NZ's lower North Island from 1924 to 1940, he was a popular writer, cartoonist and broadcaster on Hollywood movie culture during the late 1930s. After a six month working holiday sketching Hollywood movie stars in Los Angeles in 1937-38, he became a Wellington-based publicist for Warner Bros films, then moved to Sydney in 1940 and built Sydney's largest organic modernist houses of the 1950s and 1960s, a range of mid-priced modern furniture, shop fitouts, towers of home units and office buildings. Towards the end of his career in the early 1970s, he built two houses in Noumea and designed several 'thatched hut modern' schemes (unbuilt) for waterfront properties in Fiji and Vanuatu.
Snelling was the subject of a PhD thesis written by controversial Sydney author/design promoter Davina Jackson, enabled by a scholarship from RMIT University, Melbourne. Wrongly failed by two of the three external examiners (assessing it on post-modern theory rather than modernist history criteria and claiming the writing was sub-standard), the thesis now is with the Snelling archive in the State Library of New South Wales and has been published as a book, Douglas Snelling: Pan-Pacific Modern Design and Architecture (Routledge, 2017).

The exhibition encompassed ideas that were linked to issues involving the environment, ethnicity and human pain and pleasure, with relevance both locally and beyond these shores.’] [to be indexed]
