Reference: The Drawings of Ruby Lind. [Bookseller note: ‘A scarce title. Ruby Lindsay (1887 - 1919) was Norman and Percy Lindsay's sister, noted for her fluid pen and ink drawings. At an early age she attended the National Gallery School, and later drew for periodicals such as the Bulletin and the Gadfly (1906). She illustrated books and posters, and married Will Dyson, travelling with him to London. In England she continued her work in book illustration, particularly of children's books, and for magazines including Strand Magazine, The London Opinion, and The Sphere. While visiting family in Dublin, having survived the war, she caught and succumbed to the pandemic Spanish flu. This work, available only to subscribers, was produced as a tribute to Ruby. This was the second work published in honour of the artist, following her husband Will Dyson's 'Poems: In Memory of a Wife' (1919). With a full page photographic portrait, and 20 full page illustrations, including 3 in color (Princes Risborough, Fan & Sketch for Fan). 4to, (xi), 7-51 pp, 12 pp text & the balance b&w and color illustrations of her work. [William Ricketts Sanctuary,
Mt Dandenong - Victoria, Australia].

[From text?: ‘‘William Ricketts (1898–1993) was an Australian potter and sculptor of the arts and crafts movement. Born in Richmond, Victoria, in 1898, William settled permanently in Mount Dandenong, Victoria, in 1934. Although not trained as a potter and never technically superior. From 1912 to 1920 Ricketts developed skills in playing violin, crafting= jewelry and clay modelling. In 1934 he started his major artistic work, creating the sculpture park now named
William Ricketts Sanctuary in Mount Dandenong. He worked on this project until his death in 1993. In 1970 he went to India.
He spent two years there, mostly at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram spiritual center in Puducherry, developing spiritual empathy with Indian people and knowledge of their philosophy.’ ]

issue, without the 2’6 price on upper wrapper. Quarto, illustrated wrappers with yapp edges (spine split with some loss), pp. xvi; 170, scattered foxing, colour plates and other illustrations, general wear. First impression, the poem ‘Trojan War’ maintaining its misattributed to J. Wareham, and second issue, with the error on p. 5 corrected (the date originally incorrectly read 15 April 1915, this would be corrected in the second issue to 25 April 1915).
“In the year 1916, for the benefit of Patriotic Funds, Cassell & Co., published The Anzac Book with this significant note : “Written and illustrated in Gallipoli by the Men of Anzac.” and an introduction by Lieut. General Sir William Birdwood, the only “outside” contribution, as noted at p. xiv by the editor, Dr. C. E. W. Bean, in his introduction, being Mr Edgar Wallace’s poetic tribute to the Australian and New Zealand force, which was included with the consent of the author.” As collectors always desire to procure not only first editions, but better, first impressions, The Anzac Book presents an interesting problem in primogeniture. If you look carefully at p. 104, of a genuine “first,” you will find there a poem of six stanzas entitled “The Trojan Way, 1915.” It is signed “J. Wareham, 1st Australian Field Ambulance.” One copy, in my collection, is so inscribed and is bound in blue leather t.e.g., with the decorated dust-jacket in colour which became the front cover of the second impression, the earlier one being suppressed because it was soon discovered that “The Trojan War, 1915” was in reality the work of Arthur H. Adams, a member of the staff of the Bulletin, who was not an Anzac, and not even a soldier. If again you look at p. 104, in most copies of The Anzac Book you will find that, though typographically the two impressions are identical, the later has “J. Wareham” changed to “Arthur H. Adams” and contains the note : “These verses were not actually written at Anzac, but were selected by the editors for inclusion in this volume as an Australian’s tribute to the spirit of Anzac.” The explanation of the error in attribution of the poem to “J. Wareham,” whoever he was, I still have to learn.” – George Mackaness, The art of Book Collecting in Australia, Sydney 1956, p. 171.
‘This book was originally intended as a Christmas and New Year diversion for soldiers facing a harsh winter in the trenches on Gallipoli. In November 1915 a committee was formed to produce the publication and a notice seeking contributions was circulated at Gallipoli. Prizes were offered for various categories and 150 submissions were received, although not all were incorporated in the book. After the evacuation of Gallipoli, official war correspondent Charles Bean and his assistant, Arthur Bazely, edited the contributions. The drawing on the front cover, “Gallipoli 1915” is by David Baker. Over 100,000 copies of the book were sold. About half went to the AIF and many could also be found in Australian households. It cost 2/6. The illustrations, stories, cartoons and poems for this book were created by soldiers under enemy fire and in extreme hardship.’ – Victorian Collections website https://victoriancollections.net.au/items/5b06463d21ea690cb48ae326

The extraordinary collection of Warren and Cheryl Anderson, sold by court order under divorce proceedings under the company name ‘Owston’, comprising over 1000 lots of the finest furniture, paintings, photographs, and objects d’art, described by the Sydney Morning Herald as ‘Assembled over 30 years by the couple, it is almost certainly the largest sale of fine art and antiquities in Australia’. Quilty Benview full entry
Reference: Ben Quilty by Lisa Slade

[’Ben Quilty paints like there is no tomorrow. In less than a decade he has become one of the country’s favourite artists. Quilty uses licks of luscious paint to conjure his subjects which include his beloved LJ Torana, his ‘wasted’ mates, his son Joe and more recently himself. His subjects are modern day memento mori; pithy reminders of our mortality and a call to live life in the fast lane.
Painting itself is also the subject of Ben Quilty’s work. He summons his subjects with a palpable physicality. Abstract slabs of vivid colour, often underpinned by urgent aerosol drawings, bring his subjects to life. This publication has been produced on the occasion of the first comprehensive survey exhibition of Ben Quilty’s painting: Ben Quilty LIVE!’]

Backhaus-Smith Rexview full entry
Reference: An Artist’s Journey by Jill Brannock. Includes bibliographical references (p. 167)

[’The way Rex imparts the surprising beauty of what is usually perceived as harsh country, has opened many eyes to the subtle powers of nature. The re-growth after a burn bringing abundant wildlife in its wake; the watercourses which temporarily exist and miraculously fill with fish and life; the sculptural intrigue of anthills are all themes in Backhaus-Smith’s work, but it is his use of paint to build layer upon layer which creates not just a story, but a subtext too.

The book, ‘Rex Backhaus-Smith – an artist’s journey’ by Jill Brannock, gives a delightful insight into how a young man seemingly destined to eke a living off the land, steadfastly followed his inherent need to educate himself, to travel and to create, but equally depicts the gentle character of a man as comfortable preparing a sheet of Arches as he is establishing a bush camp. His bush skills have often been remarked upon by those who have travelled with him along the Strzelecki Track or through the Tanami, while his artistic abilities have been admired and studied by many.

Prints available of this painting
His new collection sees him return to canvas after decades working with only watercolour and gouache,
but it is his understanding and depth which remain the keys to his images. Backhaus-Smith is recording the Australian outback not for nostalgic or patriotic reasons, but because the bush and art constitute his very life-blood.

"Rex is a dedicated and innovative artist who has deep feelings for the land. He has the technical and creative ability to portray, sincerely and well, what he obviously loves."  - Clifton Pugh (artist)

Such genuine sentiments show that Rex Backhaus-Smith is one of Queensland's most celebrated and inspired artists. Having made the Sunshine Coast hinterland his home now for nearly ten years, there is plenty of inspiration from his everyday surrounds, but this has not curbed his curiosity to experience different parts of the world from Greece, Spain or Morocco to Bali, Thailand and Java and yet his greatest influence and love is the Outback. Rex's childhood and much of his life as a teacher was spent in Western Queensland and his fascination with the landscape, its creatures and history are the sources of many major works.

He brings to life characters, stories and his own experiences sometimes realistically and sometimes symbolically, but always creating a lasting image. Rex uses figures, wildlife and colour with a flow that entices the viewer through the story of each work to glean every detail and keep seeking more. His use of windows, bubbles or ghosting allows so many different facets of a scene or moment to be portrayed and therefore continue the fascination. Such a career is nigh on impossible to summarise; an artist who has had major exhibitions worldwide; who has had two books already written about him and been published in many more and has acquired and international following. Yet Rex Backhaus-Smith is one of nature's true gentlemen. His skills as an art tutor continue to be appreciated by many and his paintings admired by peers and public. For this is art from  truly creative soul expressing all aspects of his life's experiences thus far.’]
